What is the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course?
The NJ Defensive Driving Course is a 6-hour course designed to remind you of accident prevention techniques. In addition to learning these techniques, you will also earn a Point & Insurance Reduction.
How long does it take to complete the online PIRP course?
The course is 6 hours long. You do have the ability to sign in and out whenever you want and complete the course over several days or even weeks, but the course itself is 6 hours.
After I take the Defensive Driving course, will I receive a Point Reduction?
Yes! Up to 2 violation points will be reduced.
How do I receive the Point Reduction?
We will notify the MVC of your successful course completion. The MVC will automatically remove 2 points from your license.
How often can I take the course for point reduction purposes?
You may only take the course once every 5 years to get points reduced from your license.
Do I get a car insurance discount for taking the course?
Yes! It’s guaranteed by law.
How much of a car insurance discount will I be eligible for?
You are guaranteed a 5% discount for 3 years on the base rate of your no-fault, liability, and collision coverage but many New Jersey insurance providers do offer a premium reduction as large as 10%.
After my discount expires in 3 years, can I retake the course to extend my discount?
You sure can.
What do I need to do to get my Insurance Discount?
We will mail you a certificate of completion proving you have successfully taken the course. After you provide a copy of the certificate to your insurance provider, they will apply your discount.
Is your online course approved by MVC/DMV?
Yes, it is! Our 6-hour course is sponsored by the American Safety Institute and approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
Is the PIRP course and defensive driving the same thing?
